Benefits of Cold Rolled Steel

Better Surface Properties: Parts made with cold rolled steel often have smooth and shiny surfaces void of scale or rust. Thus, making them useful when aesthetics is essential.

Greater Strength: They are typically stronger and harder (up to 20% greater strength) than hot rolled steel. This makes them useful for high-stress applications.

Higher Precision: Since cold rolled steel does not shrink while forming, it allows for the fabrication of more precise parts with consistent and accurate shapes.

Various Surface Finish: It supports an extensive range of surface finishes.

Uses of Cold Rolled Steel

Automotive Industry

Due to the high yield strength, cold rolled steel is chiefly used for car body panels, structural parts, and chassis components.

01

Construction

In construction, cold-rolled steel sheet metal is used for roofing, cladding, and structures since it is strong and well-detailed.

02

Appliances

Cold rolled steel is applied in home-use commodities such as refrigerators, washing machines, and ovens due to its smoothly rolled surface and its ease of being shaped.

03

Furniture

This product attracts buyers who seek to obtain a highly polished appearance and, at the same time, the durability of the cold rolled sheets for use in modern furniture designs.

04

Electronics

Its precision and conductivity make cold rolled steel suitable for electronic enclosures and components.

05

Production method of cold rolled steel sheet

Cold rolling – The thickness accuracy of the cold rolled product is decided by this process. Computer control is employed for the controlling method.
Cleaning – Rolling oil on the cold rolled strip is burned off throughout this method which is next to cold rolling as mentioned above.
Skin pass rolling – Treated coils are gently rolled by the skin pass mill to prevent a defect referred to as stretcher strain to enhance strip shape and regulate mechanical properties.
Finishing – After skin pass rolling, coils are processed at the recoiling line, where they are cut to manufacture product coils.

FAQ

Q: How does the strain hardening effect in cold rolled steel contribute to its mechanical properties?

A: Strain hardening, or work hardening, occurs when cold rolled steel is deformed at room temperature, increasing its dislocation density and making it more resistant to further deformation. This results in improved tensile strength and hardness compared to hot rolled steel. The cold rolling process compresses the steel more intensively, aligning the metal's microstructure and enhancing its mechanical properties for demanding applications.

Q: What are the implications of tighter dimensional tolerances in cold rolled steel for manufacturing and design?

A: Tighter dimensional tolerances in cold rolled steel enable precise fabrication of components with minimal need for further machining or adjustments. This precision is critical for applications where exact measurements are required, such as in aerospace and automotive industries. It reduces waste and improves consistency in high-performance components, leading to more efficient manufacturing processes and better overall product quality.

Q: How does the choice between full-hard, half-hard, and quarter-hard cold rolled steel affect its applications and performance?

A: The choice among full-hard, half-hard, and quarter-hard cold rolled steel depends on the required balance between strength, flexibility, and formability. Full-hard steel offers maximum strength and minimal formability, suitable for high-stress applications needing superior durability. Half-hard and quarter-hard steels provide varying degrees of strength and formability, allowing for easier processing while still offering enhanced mechanical properties compared to hot rolled steel. Selecting the appropriate hardness level aligns with specific project requirements and application needs.

Q: What is the thickness range of cold-rolled steel?

A: These types of sections are cold-formed from steel sheet, strip, plate, or flat bar in roll forming machines, by press brake (machine press) or bending operations. The material thicknesses for such thin-walled steel members usually range from 0.0147 in. (0.373 mm) to about ¼ in. (6.35 mm).

Q: What is the hardness of cold rolled steel?

A: Hardness. Hot rolled steel is considered soft. It is malleable and ductile and has a Brinell hardness of 137. Cold rolled steel is harder, tougher, less ductile and malleable and has a Brinell hardness of 167.

Q: What is the temperature range for cold rolled steel?

A: Unlike hot rolling, which involves working metals at elevated temperatures (850 degrees celsius to 1200 degrees celsius), cold rolling is performed at room temperature (60 degrees celsius to 180 degrees celsius). This process of cold rolling offers enhanced strength, formability, and dimensional precision.

Q: What is the cutting speed for cold rolled steel?

A: Machinability is rated at 78% of B1112. Average cutting speed 130 ft/min.
